Approaching Cataviña. (Of all of the varied landscapes of Baja, this is my favorite.)

Cataviña is a small town located on the Transpeninsular Highway in the El Mármol district in the state of Baja California.  It is located 77 miles south of the town of El Rosario de Arriba where it was sunny and warm, so I took off all the rain gear.  The toponym Kataviñá is of Cochimí origin (an indigenous tribe to the area prior to the arrival of the Conquistadores), but its exact meaning is not known.  It currently has 146 inhabitants.

Cataviña is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity on the planet.  In addition to the cirio cactus pictured above (Fouquieria columnaris) characteristic of this valley, there is also its relative, the ocotillo, the giant cardón, the Elephant tree, and around 80 endemic species of cactus.  It is located in a very scenic granite boulder area in central Baja California in the Valle de los Cirios Biosphere Reserve in the Vizcaino Subdivision of the Sonoran Desert.

Here I am approaching Cataviña.  This landscape is my favorate of all the varied landscapes in the 1,000 miles from the border with California all the way to Cab San Lucas.

And here is where you buy gas in Cataviña.

Here Iam getting a gallon of regular 87 octane gas.  That is all he had.  Despite that, getting this gas follows the philosphy of get gas when it is available because who knows where or when youll get access again in Baja.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention
