9,000 miles Rush, New York (May 31, 2024)

 May 31, 2024

I passed 9,000 miles, so I'm well passed the theoretical halfway point, and yesterday I rode through Letchwork State Park.

Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is located in western New York and features dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and dense forests along the Genesee River. Its history dates back to the late 19th century when it was established through the efforts of industrialist William Pryor Letchworth, who donated his estate to the state for public enjoyment. The park, now encompassing over 14,000 acres, has become a popular destination for outdoor recreation, offering hiking, camping, and breathtaking scenic views.

The Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park is the largest of the park's three major waterfalls, cascading 107 feet down the Genesee River with a powerful and picturesque flow. Surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic cliffs, it offers a stunning natural spectacle, especially when illuminated at night during the summer months.

The Mount Morris Dam, located at the northern end of Letchworth State Park, was completed in 1952 to control flooding along the Genesee River. Standing 230 feet high and spanning 1,028 feet across the river gorge, it not only serves a critical role in flood management but also provides panoramic views of the park's natural beauty.
