Logan, Utah:Kevin & Erin (July 10, 2024)

have embarked on what I hope will be a 4 month, 17,000 mile motorcycle ride through the US and parts of Mexico and Canada to visit family and friends and to benefit Children International.  Please consider supporting me – learn more here Will's Charity Ride for Children International - PledgeIt

I've arrived in Logan, Utah 14,562 miles from home.  Woke up at 5:30AM this morning, hit the road minutes after 6AM.  First hour was a bit chilly, stopped in Price, UT for a Starbucks coffee and scone.

Starting in Ogden, I stopped about every 30 minutes at a gas station to take off my t-shirt to wet it and put it back on for evaporative cooling for the next 25 minutes.  This served to help keep my core temperature in a reasonable state.  I am at the home of Kevin Brewer and his wife Erin.  Kevin was my freshman roommate from college in New Paltz, New York.  We haven't seen each other since 1977.

We spent a few days hanging and catching up, disucssing what has passed since we last saw each other.  Kevin and Erin's son who is just 19 years old has moved to Washington and works for a trade organziation.  While he has been there for a while, it is his first time living independently and alone.  He's learning lots of life lessons.  He's ambitious and eventually wants to work in congress.

After spending years finding his direction/passion, Kevin moved to Logan, at the time a small town, and began working for the University of Utah and recenlty retired.   During his time at UU, he met Erin, his wife and mother of his son Finnegan.

This visit represents one of the rewarding elements of this ride, making, or remaking connections with others.

The town of Logan was founded in 1859 by settlers sent by Brigham Young to survey for the site of a fort near the banks of the Logan River.  They named their new community "Logan" for Ephraim Logan, an early fur trapper in the area. Logan was incorporated on January 17, 1866. Brigham Young College was founded here on August 6, 1877 (and closed in 1926), and Utah State University was founded in 1888.
